About the Centre for Spirituality

The establishment of the Cathedral Centre for Spirituality in 2007 has helped to renew and confirm awareness that for Christians everything begins and ends with spirituality because God is at the centre of everything, the whole of life.

The Centre contributes to the rhythm of regular and frequent prayer in the daily life of the Cathedral and the lives of the participants. It encourages people to learn to rest in (waste time with) God, to let God love them and to let that love flow out into the world, and to recognise and respond to God’s presence and love in every aspect of life.

The Centre for Spirituality and the Institute of Anglican Studies work closely together in blending historical, contemporary and spiritual aspects of courses on Anglicanism.

The Centre also collaborates with the Education Centre, the Cathedral Scholars and the Organist and Master of the Choristers in exploring the spiritual life of the Cathedral with the wider community.

When school groups investigate the “God-Space” of the Cathedral, they are also invited to delve into “God Space” within themselves in the quiet of St Saviour’s Chapel and to “waste time” with God in a period of contemplative prayer.

In cooperation with the Dean, “Unceasing prayer” was developed in the Cathedral with the daily offices, and “Out of the Silence … Into the Silence” prayers at regular intervals through the week. Centre for Spirituality retreats are occasionally organised for members of the Cathedral congregation.

The 2022 Spirituality Series runs from February to December and includes morning and full-day sessions. A pdf of the full programme can be downloaded below.
