Today, Friday 27 August, the Cathedral welcomed Defence Force Chaplains of Perth and The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia, at a Service of Prayer and Lament for Afghanistan.
The Service was based on one prepared by Bishop Keith, Bishop of North Queensland and a former member of the Defence Forces who last week said “We have all been affected in some way by the conflict in Afghanistan. Many of our service personnel have deployed to Afghanistan, as have civilian workers in the Australian Government or with NGOs. Our links of family and friendship bring us all together in grief and worry at this time. Forty one soldiers died in Afghanistan, and many more have died at their own hand since returning home. Many veterans of Afghanistan are wounded in soul, body and mind, and their suffering has been shared with family and friends. And as we watch the last moments being played out at the International Airport in Kabul, we lament for those who are our friends who are being left behind, and pray that God will have mercy on them. So we pray and we lament for Afghanistan.”
The Service can be viewed on our YouTube channel here and a copy of the Order of Service can be found here. All present were particularly moved by the reflection given by Captain Ben Macdonald, RAN, Director ANZACS Systems Program Office.
