We are delighted to report that the respected New York magazine, The New Criterion, has awarded very high praise to our Cathedral Organist, Dr Joseph Nolan.
The extract below compares the recordings of Widor organ symphonies by Daniel Roth (St Sulpice, Paris), Christian Schmitt (organist to the Berlin and Bamberger Philharmonic) Pierre Pincemaille (St Denis, Paris) and Dr Nolan.
In recent years, Saint-Sulpice’s current organiste-titulaire, Daniel Roth, as well as Joseph Nolan, Christian Schmitt, and the late Pierre Pincemaille have recorded the symphonies. The early ones atone for their somewhat weak structural coherence by a lovely tunefulness, while the last three symphonies are nobly spiritual. The Nolan set in particular is very fine.
