St George’s Cathedral

A place for people to gather in worship and prayer – sometimes with spoken words, sometimes in silence, and sometimes enveloped in sacred music.
Our doors are open to everyone of any faith or none.

The First Mass of Easter with Baptism & Confirmation
As the Sacred Triduum comes to its climax, the Easter Vigil begins outside the West Door of the Cathedral in darkness as the Easter fire is lit and the new Paschal candle is marked with nails remembering the Crucifixion of Our Lord.

The Cathedral then returns to life with candles, music, readings, and incense, as the great Alleluias are proclaimed and we celebrate the first mass of Easter.

Candidates who have been prepared during Lent are baptised and confirmed by the Archbishop and we rejoice as God adds to the Church’s number and we celebrate the Resurrection of Christ.
