Three world premieres, bold cross-cultural mainstage works, a strong pledge to a diverse cast, and an immersive one-on-one festival lead Season Two of St George’s Dance and Theatre programme.

Following the success of its inaugural season, St George’s Dance and Theatre (SGD&T) has announced its second season. Featuring a mainstage programme of five major works, including three diverse performance pieces and a festival, the programme stars an extraordinary line-up of acclaimed actors, directors, musicians, and designers.

The season features a roll call of music and theatre rebels and emerging stars. It celebrates diverse women on stage including Kali Srinivasan (Actor, Palme D’or winning film Dheepan) and Aanisa Vylet (Phillip Parson’s Award-nominated playwright). The directors taking the lead this year include Phil Thomson, Dino Dimitriadis, as well as St George’s Dance and Theatre’s Artistic Director Jay Emmanuel.

The first show in Season Two is the world premiere of BIRYANI a unique theatrical and culinary experience, combining storytelling, food, and Indian classical music. International star Kali Srinivasan cooks her family's trademark recipe of biryani right in front of the audience, sharing personal stories about food, love, and home. This experience is directed and designed by Jay Emmanuel and the music is composed by Perth’s rising talent Tao Issaro (In Situ, Strut Dance; Kaya, Ochre Contemporary Dance Company).

“BIRYANI is a very intimate, but at the same time a very communal, experience,” Kali said.

Another season highlight, The Girl, is a dangerously funny and semi-autobiographical story of an Arab Muslim Girl tripping over her sexuality. She falls in love with a stranger, by accident of course. A small seed of doubt begins to grow. She tries to ignore it, pluck it out. Questions build up in her mind. She turns to the only friend she can rely on… the Internet. Written and performed by Aanisa Vylet and directed by Dino Dimitriadis, The Girl is presented by the Apocalypse Theatre Company.

The Girl has thrilled audiences from Paris to Barcelona to Sydney to Adelaide, and now it’s Perth’s turn to get a share of this wonderful madness,” Jay said.

Accompanying the mainstage production show, we bring Australia's only festival of one-on-one art – Proximity Festival, now in its fifth year – to Cathedral Square. Ten days of experimental micro-performances, intimate walking tours, caffeine-fuelled discussions, and a late night opening.

The nine artists featured in this year’s festival are: Cigdem Aydemir (NSW), Hannah Brontë (QLD), Mike Bianco (USA/WA), Liam Colgan (WA), Rachael Dease (WA), Atlanta Eke (VIC), Jen Jamieson (WA), Nat Randall (NSW), and Tyrone Robinson (WA).

Led by Director/Curator Sarah Rowbottom and Curator Kelli Mccluskey, with guest Provocateur Jeff Khan of Sydney’s Performance Space, based at Carriageworks, the 2017 Festival presents final outcomes from the highly-acclaimed Proximity Lab, which brought curated artists together in December 2016, to develop concepts in-situ at Cathedral Square through Proximity’s new biannual model.

“The shift from arts institution to a precinct in the heart of Perth’s city centre is a first for Proximity, allowing artists freedom to occupy multiple sites, and creating intimate experiences inside some of Perth’s most iconic buildings and outdoor surrounds,” Festival director Sarah Rowbottam said.

The festival brings together artists from around Australia working across theatre, dance, live-art, hip-hop, and visual art to create nine personalized experiences for an audience, one at a time.

“Proximity Festival is a very thrilling collaboration. The rigor of the process will be palpable in the performances. It is a festival that will allow the spectator to see space and time transformed and transposed,” Jay said.

The final work in the season is MAA, devised and performed by Jay Emmanuel and directed by Phil Thomson with original music by Tao Issaro. MAA is a story about separation: or intimacy at a hundred miles apart.

On the edge of reason there is a magical rope that Jay Emmanuel twists and turns to enchant his audience in MAA. In this wonderful new commission from the feet of a dancer who performed at the Pantheon in Paris, a world of soil and seeds dances from the domestic to the fanciful. Emmanuel’s mix of contemporary dance, mime, movement, and the metamorphosis of objects is at the vanguard of European performance. It is a show that welds the physical with the spiritual to create a spectacle that will captivate, charm and inspire.

“From the opening night of BIRYANI to closing night of MAA, we are jumping head-on into exploring the rich variety of cultures around us, and by doing so exploring our own Australian identity,” declared Jay.

“The cornerstone of our art is diversity. We give voice to artists of all backgrounds so we can better understand our world. We work to open a dialogue about the critical social and political issues of the time. What we create is personal and self-revelatory for both performers and spectators.”
