We were delighted to welcome Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwell to the Cathedral yesterday for our Dedication Festival Choral Eucharist.
Also in attendance were Her Excellency the Honourable Kerry Sanderson AO, Governor of Western Australia; the Honourable Colin Barnett MLA, Premier of Western Australia; the Right Honourable Lisa Scaffidi, Lord Mayor of Perth; students and teachers from St George’s Anglican Grammar School; along with the Cathedral Congregation.
The Service was celebrated by the Most Reverend Roger Herft AM, Archbishop of Perth. The Very Reverend Richard Pengelley, Dean of Perth, delivered the address (which can be found here).
St George’s Cathedral Choir and Consort, directed by Joseph Nolan, Organist & Master of the Choristers, sang the Missa Brevis of William Walton (1902-1983), ‘I was glad’ by Hubert Parry (1848-1918), and ‘Ubi Caritas’ by Western Australia’s own Perry Joyce (born 1989). Musicians from West Australian Symphony Orchestra joined the Cathedral Choirs for this occasion.
St George’s Cathedral replaced St George’s Church (built 1845) in 1888. It is the only example in WA of Edmund Blacket’s work and is built of clay bricks in the English Gothic Revival style. It was consecrated on 15 November.
