Art Awards and Exhibition 2007

“Retrospectives”

From the past we see the future

The Annual Cathedral Art Awards and Exhibition was held in St George’s Cathedral from Tuesday 31 July until Thursday 9 August.  This year’s theme for the Exhibition – Retrospectives: From the Past we see the Future complemented the Sesquicentenary Celebrations of the Diocese and attracted 161 entries from 19 schools across all major sectors of secondary education in Perth and its environs as far south as Mandurah.

As has become customary with this annual cathedral event, a major function was held in the Cathedral on the night before the exhibition was open to the public to celebrate with the artists, their guests, sponsors and civic and church leaders the work done by the by the dedicated teachers and students of art in schools in our community.  Musical entertainment was provided by a wind quartet from Mercedes College and student hosts were once again provided by Perth College. An estimated attendance of 400 people enjoyed the occasion.

The Director of the Cathedral Education Centre, Mr Richard Flanigan said that the Cathedral Art Awards and Exhibition has become a most prestigious event in the Visual Arts annual programme in schools because it is the only forum where talented art students across all education sectors are able to have their work displayed professionally and judged by professional artists at no costs to themselves or the schools with the added opportunity to win significant financial awards.
