ORGANIST AND MASTER OF THE CHORISTERS: Joseph Nolan ASSISTANT ORGANIST: Stewart Smith HEAD CHORISTER: Peter Lynch THE CHOIR OF ST GEORGE'S CATHEDRAL ...my interest was instantly aroused by the quality of the singing on the recording… beautifully sung, with a fine and clear sound…very well honed, the boys’ sound pure without being pinched, and on a higher level than one could hope to find in many British cathedrals at present... This is very good choral singing indeed, and might just make some people sit up and take note. (International Record Review) The Choir of St George’s Cathedral has become widely noted as much for the quality of its performances as the diversity of its repertoire. In recent years the Choir has performed with several leading figures in the field of choral music, most notably Stephen Darlington and Nicholas McGegan. The primary function of the Choir is to sing at the choral services in the Cathedral, where music has traditionally occupied a position of much importance. This choral tradition draws on the great treasures of the sacred choral heritage, and embraces music from many different styles and schools of composition, ranging from Byrd, Palestrina and Victoria through to more recent masterpieces by Poulenc, Stravinsky and Dove. Through its regular performances in the Cathedral, as well as on the concert platform and on television, the Choir has established a reputation as one of the most important musical groups in Australia. The Cathedral Choir performs nationally and internationally and also enjoys working with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) including performances of Faure's Requiem at the Perth Concert Hall, which have been broadcast on ABC Classic FM. A CD 'Magnificat' - a collection of settings of Evening Canticles from Gibbons to Tavener, released by ABC Classics, has received highly favourable reviews.
