Former Olympian on spirituality and sport

In an after-work talk on Wednesday 21 April, former Olympian Richard Pengelley will explore the links between spirituality and sport.

"Wherever sport began, in every ancient culture, it had a religious purpose," said Reverend Canon Pengelley, who is Chaplain of St George's College and Lecturer in Spirituality at the Department of Human Movement at the University of Western Australia.

"Perhaps things haven't changed much, especially in Australia," he added.

His talk will examine the historical (from the Ancient Olympics to Muscular Christianity), sociological (especially the extraordinary ritualisation that goes with sport), psychological, ethical, media and theological links between sport and spirituality.

There will be opportunities for discussion and questions over plunger coffee. For booking information, go to our Events section: Workers' Coffee and Spirituality.
