The Marriage Service
All Anglican weddings are required to follow the same order of service. However, you are invited to personalise your ceremony by choosing your readings, prayers and music.
You will find a selection of
appropriate readings and prayers here (537.40 Kb). You are free to introduce other options when you meet to discuss the service with the priest who is taking your wedding.
If you choose just one reading, it needs to be from the New Testament. If you want more than one reading, they may be taken from the Old or New Testament. Remember you will also need to choose people to stand up and read each of your chosen readings.
If you choose only one prayer, then it must be for you – the wedding couple. If you choose more than one, you can include prayers for your family.
Hymns are optional in your service. If you want to include them, it is important that you choose hymns that are familiar to your guests – otherwise they may not feel confident about singing. This is more important than choosing traditional wedding hymns. Be sure to tell the priest the name of the tune you want used for each of your hymns too.
