St George’s Art, our annual exhibition of WA senior secondary school students’ artworks at the Cathedral, is in its ninth year and is more popular than ever. This year, over 120 works from 43 schools are to be displayed, and once again the event will be opened by Stefano Carboni, Director of the Art Gallery of WA.
The exhibition has developed a reputation as a prestigious event in the educational arts calendar and is recognised as a forum for aspiring young artists. St George’s Art 2011 has an open theme to allow teachers and students to give free reign to their creativity. At the Gala Awards Night, held on Thursday 28 July, prizes will be awarded to selected works by a prestigious panel of judges. On Saturday 30 July, we will be running a workshop, for participating artists, which will focus on the task of preparing artwork for a professional exhibition and for sale.
As usual, seating down both side-aisles will be moved out, transforming our beautiful Cathedral into a unique “gallery” for the thirteen-day exhibition. We expect a wide cross-section of visitors to come and view these amazing artworks, the standard of which rises with each passing year. There will also be the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice prize, awarded at the close of the exhibition, and to purchase artworks.
St George’s Art 2011 is fully funded by corporate sponsorship, private donations, the St George’s Cathedral Foundation for the Arts, and the City of Perth. There is no charge to exhibitors, ensuring all young artists are able to participate, regardless of economic circumstances.
